  1. 1915- . English footballer who played for
  2. Stoke City, Blackpool, and England. He played
  3. nearly 700 Football League games, and won 54
  4. international caps. He was the first European
  5. Footballer of the Year 1956. An outstanding
  6. right-winger, he had the nickname `the Wizard
  7. of the Dribble' because of his ball control.
  8. At the age of 38 he won an FA Cup Winners'
  9. medal when Blackpool beat Bolton Wanderers
  10. 4-3, Matthews scoring three goals in the last
  11. 20 minutes. He was the first Footballer of
  12. the Year in 1948 (again in 1963), and the
  13. first footballer to be knighted. He continued
  14. to play first-division football after the age
